Leading lawmakers on Monday named J.G. Scott as the new director of the Legislature’s research arm.

Scott, the assistant director for fiscal affairs, replaces Raney Gilliland, who had been director of legislative research since 2012.

Scott led the Kansas Legislative Research Department as acting director after  Gilliland retired in March.

A graduate of Washburn University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Scott has worked as the department’s assistant director for fiscal affairs since January 2003.

Earlier, Scott had worked as the budget director for the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services from 1994 to 2002.

In that role, Scott helped develop and implement the agency’s $1.8 billion budget that funded state hospitals, state juvenile correctional facilities, child support enforcement programs as well as foster care and other child welfare programs.

As director, Scott will oversee a department that has about 40 employees and a budget of about $4.1 million.
