new poll shows the Kansas governor’s race in a dead heat with Republican Kris Kobach ahead by just a nose.

The poll released by Emerson College shows Kobach with 37 percent compared to 36 percent for Democrat Laura Kelly and 9 percent for independent candidate Greg Orman.

The poll showed “other candidates” – Libertarian Jeff Caldwell and independent Rick Kloos – at 3 percent combined.

Undecided was at 15 percent.

The e-poll of 938 registered Kansas voters was done Sept. 26 through Sept. 28. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The poll conducted at the liberal arts college in Boston produced results similar to what’s been seen in polls done by the Kansas National Education Association and the Democratic Party.

All of those polls showed Kobach and Kelly deadlocked at the top of the field with Orman in a distant third place.

Emerson researchers found that Republicans are going for Kobach, who gets 58 percent of the vote to 18 percent for Kelly.

Meanwhile, 70 percent of Democrats support Kelly compared to just 8 percent for Kobach. Independents break for Kelly 35 percent to 26 percent for Kobach, the poll shows.

The poll also found that President Donald Trump was more popular than Kobach. Trump’s favorables were at 55 percent compared to 47 percent for Kobach. However, Trump’s unfavorables were at 45 percent compared to Kobach, who 37 percent viewed unfavorably.

Kelly was viewed favorably by 42 percent of those polled as compared to 30 percent unfavorably.

The poll found no significant difference in gender with 38 percent of men supporting Kobach and 35 percent supporting Kelly.

Kelly received support from 37 percent of women compared to 36 percent supporting Kobach.
