Former Lt. Gov. Tracey Mann used personal contributions to outdistance Finney County eye doctor Bill Clifford in fundraising for the GOP 1st Congressional District primary.

Mann raised $184,701, nearly three times the $64,765 that Clifford raised, aside from the hundreds of thousands of dollars the physician pumped into his own campaign.

Mann has raised a total of $733,168 during the cycle, leaving him with $470,405 going into the last month of the congressional campaign to replace 1st District U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Clifford’s campaign has been buoyed by $590,000 in personal loans he’s made to his campaign, including a $155,000 loan in the second quarter.

A Finney County commissioner, Clifford has raised $333,443 once the personal loans are subtracted from his fundraising. He had $455,721 in the bank on June 30.

The fundraising numbers rolled in at the same time as Americans for Prosperity endorsed Mann in the congressional race.

“During the current economic downturn hitting both our state and country, Kansas families have been forced to tighten their belts and readjust their budgets to ensure they’re living within their means,” wrote Elizabeth Patton, senior adviser to Americans for Prosperity Action.

“Mann knows Washington should have to do the same. He will take on the federal government’s spending addiction and work to tackle the debt our elected officials are forcing on the next generation. Because, as Mann has stated, ‘spending, deficits, and debt are killing the American dream.'”

Over on the Democratic side, elementary school teacher Kali Barnett reported raising $114,462 in the second quarter, giving her a total of $333,256 for the election cycle so far. She reported having $99,648 on hand as of June 30.

Democratic rival Christy Davis had not filed her report as of 8 Wednesday night.
