Lyon County sheriff’s candidate asks Supreme Court to put him on ballot

A Republican who wants to run for Lyon County sheriff is asking the Kansas Supreme Court to force the county clerk to put him back on the ballot after questions were raised about his criminal record.

Daniel Klingensmith went directly to the Supreme Court because the county clerk is required to start sending out absentee ballots to members of the military 45 days before the Aug. 6 primary election, which was Saturday, June 22.

Court records show that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation gave County Clerk Tammy Vopat conflicting accounts about whether Klingensmith had a criminal record that would keep . . .
