Lawmakers seek end to contract nursing at state hospitals as costs spike

With contract nursing straining the state budget, lawmakers are seeking to prevent Larned State Hospital from hiring contract nurses starting in mid-2026.

The House Appropriations Committee this week agreed to bar Larned from using contract nursing starting July 1, 2026, which is the beginning of fiscal 2027.

Republican state Rep. Sean Tarwater successfully persuaded the committee to agree to end contract nursing at Larned to lessen the state's dependence on using contractors because of its inability to fill state jobs that pay less.
