Republican state Senate candidate Jeff Klemp expanded his lead over Democratic state Sen. Jeff Pittman after provisional ballots were counted Wednesday morning in Leavenworth County.
Klemp, a Lansing businessman, gained 148 provisional ballots while Pittman picked up 119.
The 29-vote difference in provisional ballots gave Klemp a 70-vote lead with provisional ballots set to be counted in Wyandotte County on Thursday.
If the lead stands in Senate District 5, Klemp would give Republicans a 31-seat supermajority in the Kansas Senate to go along with an 88-seat supermajority in the House.
