The Kansas House on Tuesday approved a bill changing the budget process in a way that supporters say will prevent a state government shutdown if the Legislature and the governor don’t agree on a spending plan.
The House voted to 82-41 to approve a bill allowing an existing budget to continue past the current fiscal year if a new budget isn’t passed by the start of a new fiscal year. Six Republicans joined with Democrats in opposing the bill. Two Democrats were absent.
