President Joe Biden's administration is easing off its demand for the state to immediately exercise its senior water rights for the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday asked the state to pursue a solution that would balance the interests of the refuge with junior water rights holders in the Rattlesnake Creek basin that feeds the wildlife sanctuary located in Stafford County.
Federal, state and local officials said the immediate administration of those water rights would have been economically disastrous for the state, while environmentalists argued those water rights were critical to protecting . . .
