Federal regulators remove lesser prairie chicken from protected list

Federal regulators have removed environmental protections for the lesser prairie chicken following a court ruling last summer, a decision environmentalists said would eliminate the birds’ safeguards against oil and gas development.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also rescinded a separate rule for threatened species that applied to Kansas and several other states that incentivized conservation and streamlined the regulatory process for minor impacts on the species.
