Kobach names new solicitor general

Attorney General-elect Kris Kobach is naming retired Kansas Court of Appeals Judge Anthony J. Powell as his top appellate lawyer.

Powell, who retired from the bench on June 30, will take the role of solicitor general, who represents the state in civil and criminal appeals.

Appointed to the Court of Appeals by former Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback in 2013, Powell also served in the Legislature where he was a staunch opponent of abortion.

During his time on the court, Powell heard more than 2,000 cases and wrote 672 opinions.
