Incoming Senate minority leader hires new chief of staff

Incoming Senate Minority Leader Dinah Sykes announced on Wednesday that she hired Cory Sheedy from the governor’s office as her new chief of staff.

Sheedy replaces Kerry Gooch, who has been the chief of staff to outgoing Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley.

Sheedy had worked as legislative director and assistant counsel in the governor’s office.

Before he joined the governor’s office, Sheedy served as chief of staff to the House Democratic Caucus where he oversaw the 2016 legislative races that expanded the House caucus by 13 seats.

He previously worked for the state health department as lead counsel for the State Employee Health Plan and represented the state in workers’ compensation, Medicaid and health privacy compliance matters.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Kansas and a law degree from Washburn University.
