Highway Patrol seeks to equip troopers with body cameras for first time

The Kansas Highway Patrol is seeking money from the Legislature to equip its troopers for the first time with body cameras in an effort to foster transparency.

Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith appeared before two legislative committees this week asking for $2 million for body cameras as he updated them on developments in the agency since his arrival last year.

The agency is seeking another $2 million for body cameras from the U.S. Justice Department.

Smith allowed for the possibility of asking for a larger appropriation if the federal money doesn't come through.
