Former Republican gubernatorial candidate, real estate executive dies

Nestor Weigand, a Kansas real estate titan who ran for governor in 1990 promising to make Kansans proud again, died Wednesday. He was 84.

The chairman and chief executive offficer of J.P. Weigand & Sons, Weigand had been involved in commercial, industrial and investment real estate for more than 40 years.

In 1990, Weigand challenged Republican Gov. Mike Hayden in the Republican primary, finishing second and losing by a little less than 8,000 votes.

Hayden later lost to Democrat Joan Finney in the general election.

Weigand focused his campaign on taxes, education, accountability and Kansas values.
