Former state Rep. John Wilson will take the helm of Kansas Action for Children, replacing Annie McKay who is leaving next month.

The organization announced the change in leadership on Friday afternoon. Wilson now serves as the group’s vice president of advocacy. He’s been with KAC since 2017.

“I’m honored to step up as KAC marks 40 years of working on behalf of Kansas children and families,” said Wilson, a former three-term Democratic House member from Lawrence.

“Our team has been busy tackling the big problems facing our state, and we’re eager to share solutions that will transform lives.”

During his time at KAC, Wilson worked on expanding affordable and accessible child care while advocating for a “responsible” state tax policy and budget.

The organization did not say where McKay is headed. She’s been with KAC for seven years, including three as president. She is leaving Oct. 31.

She’s credited with growing the Kansas Center for Economic Growth within KAC into a statewide resource on budgeting and tax policy.

“Kansas needs a confident, passionate voice to educate, engage, and activate champions for children,” said Angela Knackstedt, chair of KAC’s board of directors.

“We have been beyond fortunate to have Annie as that voice,” she said, “and John will continue to take us to new heights.”
