Johnson County election officials could legally destroy election documents sought by former Sheriff Calvin Hayden as part of his failed voter fraud investigation without a subpoena or a search warrant, a new attorney general's opinion says.

The opinion, sought by Republican Sen. Mike  Thompson, establishes a new general framework when ballots can be destroyed without going into the details of the Johnson County dispute over whether old ballots could be destroyed.
