Johnson County Sheriff Cal Hayden says he has the "authority, autonomy and independence" to bring a civil lawsuit without the oversight of the Johnson County Commission.
In a court filing this week, the sheriff made his case using a constitutional amendment approved by Kansas voters ensuring that county sheriffs are an elected position and would bar any effort to make the position appointed.
The sheriff is fighting the Johnson County Commission's effort . . .
