The U.S. Department of Agriculture has named former Kansas Insurance Commissioner Ken Selzer to a panel that oversees the federal crop insurance program.

Selzer and three others – Nicole Berg of Washington, Scott Silveus of Indiana and Pat Swanson of Iowa – were named to the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation board of directors. They will serve four-year terms starting Nov. 20.

The board oversees the federal crop insurance program managed by the Agriculture Department’s Risk Management Agency.

Federal law requires board members to represent core groups involved in managing farm risk, including at least one who is a specialty crop producer, one involved in insurance and another knowledgeable about reinsurance or regulation.

Selzer served as Kansas Insurance Commissioner from 2015 to 2019. He left office to mount an unsuccessful campaign for governor.

He is the executive managing director for reinsurance broker Aon.

He graduated from Kansas State with a degree in accounting.

He has a master’s in business administration from the University of Southern California.

“Ken’s work ethic and professional career make him uniquely qualified to be on the FCIC Board of Directors,” U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran said in a statement.

“Ken understands the crop insurance system at a professional and personal level and will provide important leadership and knowledge during his tenure on the board.”
