Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt on Thursday appointed a new solicitor general to replace Toby Crouse, who was recently confirmed to a federal judgeship.

Brant Laue

Schmidt has named Brant Laue, who served as former Gov. Sam Brownback’s general counsel, as the state’s top appellate lawyer.

Laue joined the attorney general’s office in May 2019 as deputy solicitor general after working as the top lawyer for Brownback and former Gov. Jeff Colyer.

Laue previously served as special assistant to the assistant attorney general in the civil division of the U.S. Justice Department.

He is a former law clerk to Judge Roger L. Wollman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

He also previously practiced law in Kansas City, where he focused on commercial litigation and appellate practice.
