New schism develops over governor’s latest executive order

Another schism is developing between Gov. Laura Kelly and Republican lawmakers over whether counties can opt out of her executive order establishing health protocols for schools to follow as the number of coronavirus cases accelerates.

Republican leaders in the Legislature, backed by Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt, are questioning whether the new emergency powers law allows local counties to either opt out or modify the governor's health standards for schools.
