Kansas Catholic bishops put abolishment of death penalty on ’26 agenda

The state's Catholic bishops are asking lawmakers to revisit legislation abolishing the death penalty in Kansas, an issue last seriously discussed at the Capitol in 2019.

The Kansas Catholic Conference, the voice of the Catholic Church in Kansas, is making the death penalty part of its legislative agenda for next session and onward.

"We are wanting to move that discussion," said Chuck Weber, executive director of the Catholic Conference.

"We haven't been told 'no' and we haven't been told 'yes,'" Weber said in an interview.

Weber characterized the death penalty as a "consistent culture of life issue . . .
