Former Republican state Rep. Richard Carlson, the former influential chair of the House tax committee known for a rich bass voice that could command a room, died Wednesday at 81.
The death of the former St. Marys lawmaker and transportation secretary was confirmed by former state Rep. Ron Highland, a family friend.
"He was a true gentleman," Highland said.
Carlson, a cattleman, banker and businessman, served in the Kansas House from 2004 through 2014 when the Legislature enacted former Gov. Sam Brownback's tax cuts.
He later went to work for Brownback, first as legislative liaison for the state revenue . . .
