(UPDATED  to add a candidate in House District 30, include comment from Republicans and correct link to Poetter Parshall web site)

The filing deadline for Kansas House candidates passed at noon Monday.

There were 261 candidates who  filed for House seats, including 136 Republicans and 125 Democrats.

There are 25 Republican primaries and 18 Democratic primaries.

The llist could change since one Democratic candidate has filed an objection to not being placed on the ballot in House District 122, an issue that could be settled by June 12.

Most notably on Monday, former Democratic state Rep. Jason Probst of Hutchinson filed to run again in the 102nd House District. He was unseated by Republican Rep. Kyler Sweely two years ago.

And Republican state Rep. Chuck Smith of Pittsburg withdrew on Monday after serving in the House for four terms in two separate stints.

And Republican state Rep. Carl Turner of Leawood didn’t file for reelection after serving three terms in the House.

State Rep. Brandon Woodard of Overland Park, the top Democrat in the House, proclaimed the number of House Democratic candidates was a record for the caucus.

“When I was elected leader, I promised our caucus that we would build the team and infrastructure needed to recruit the strongest roster of community-rooted statehouse candidates Kansas has ever seen,” Woodard said.

“Today, we delivered on that promise.”

The Republicans scoffed at the claim.

“Many of the candidates are familiar faces who have already been rejected by Kansas voters,” the Republican House Campaign Committee said in a statement issued Tuesday.

“Somehow Kansas Democrats think they can accomplish something new with a cabal of retreads and rejects.

“The agenda is certainly familiar: high property taxes, wasteful spending and policies that consistently fail to connect with Kansas voters.”

One of the hottest primaries in the state could be in House District 42 where Leavenworth County Commissioner Mike Stieben is making another run against Republican incumbent Lance Neelly. Stieben lost to Neelly in the 2024 primary by 37 votes.

Another Republican primary worth watching will be in Olathe, where retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Palenski is in a primary against Rep. Mike Storm to see who will replace the late John Resman. Precinct committee leaders picked Storm to fill out Resman’s term earlier this year.

Also in House District 5, Republican Rep. Courtney Sappington of Baldwin City is facing a primary challenge from Courtney Crawford of Paola who opposes data centers and has called for a moratorium on their development. Republican Spring Hill School Board member Jon Chitwood has joined the race.

And in House District 71, Republican state Rep. Steven Howe of Salina is facing a primary challenge from entrepreneur Jay Vanier, who is already criticizing the incumbent for voting against “major pro-growth legislation.”

On the Democratic side, there is Brandon Whipple’s attempt to return to the Legislature in a primary election against Democratic incumbent Henry Helgerson of Eastborough, who has the support of the top Democrat in the House.

In suburban Johnson County, there are two Democrats from Overland Park – C. Edward Young and Sara Kiewiet – battling it out in a primary to face Republican state Rep. Sean Tarwater of Stilwell in House District 27.

Young is an aviation attorney and previously served as director of aviation for the state. Kiewiet has a sales background who also worked previously as an attorney and earned her law degree from Ohio State University.

And in Kansas City, there are four Democrats running to replace longtime Democratic state Rep. Louis Ruiz in House District 31, including a Unified Government commissioner, a professional vocalist and a candidate who ran for the Legislature in another district in 2024 and lost.

Also, Democratic state Rep. Ford Carr of Wichita, who has been no stranger to controversy during his term in the Legislature, has drawn a primary challenge.

Bonita Gooch, the editor of The Community Voice newspaper in Wichita and the daughter of the late state Sen.  Ulysses Lee “Rip” Gooch, a pioneer for African Americans in aviation, filed to run against Carr.

Now on to the latest filings, although in some isolated cases we did not hear back from candidates and they didn’t have much of an internet presence or were lacking contact information.

In some cases, information about candidates was collected from party officials. We provided additional context only for races that were competitive.

This list will be updated as more candidates file and information about them comes available.
