C.J. Grover, a former aide to Congressman Kevin Yoder, has left his job as spokesman for Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

The attorney general announced late Thursday that Grover had left and would be replaced by John Milburn, a longtime statehouse reporter who worked in former Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration.

“I am grateful to C.J for his service to the state and wish him all the best,” Schmidt said in a statement.

Grover did not return phone calls about his new position.

But on Tuesday morning it was revealed that he was working as the executive director of a new political action committee that launched a new ad campaign against Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kris Kobach.

Grover, a 2012 graduate of the University of Kansas Law School, had worked for Yoder in a number of roles from 2012 through 2018.

He had worked as a field coordinator for Yoder’s 2012 congressional campaign and later as his press secretary and communications director.

Grover ran Yoder’s unsucessful reelection campaign for Congress against Democrat Sharice Davids in 2018.

Milburn, meanwhile, had been working as the executive officer for the attorney general since 2019.

He previously worked as director of legislative and public affairs in the Department of Administration in the Brownback administration.

Milburn served as communications director in Brownback’s reelection campaign in 2014.

He worked for The Associated Press from 1999 until 2014 and as a copy editor for the Lawrence Journal-World.

“I am pleased to have John bring his wealth of experience to serve as spokesperson for the attorney general’s office,” Schmidt said.
