Gov. Laura Kelly on Thusday announced almost $50 million in grants for bringing faster internet service to needed parts of the state.

Overall, the governor announced 67 projects that are funded from federal coronavirus relief money approved by Congress earlier this year.

Commerce Secretary David Toland said the grants would connect more than 75,000 households, almost 6,000 businesses and more than 600 government institutions.

The governor also announced the start of the Office of Broadband Development, which will be housed in the Kansas Department of Commerce.

It will be led by Stanley Adams, current director of broadband initiatives . . .
