State fire marshal takes over day care inspections; cites conflicting fire codes

The state fire marshal is taking control of inspections for Kansas child care providers in what he says is an effort to streamline the administrative process and bring consistency to enforcing state fire regulations.

Kansas Fire Marshal Mark Engholm sent a letter to child care providers last week, informing them that inspections of all child care facilities would be carried out by his office, although in the past some local fire departments have done those reviews.

"As our state and local fire codes have grown farther apart, we have seen more instances of conflicting information being given to project managers . . .
