Attorney General Derek Schmidt is bowing out of the controversy over municipal nondiscrimination laws.

Schmidt this week turned down Overland Park's request to sort out whether local nondiscrimination laws conflict with a religious freedom law passed by the Legislature in 2013.

The attorney general's office said it could not offer an opinion because it was consumed with other business. It said it did not have the resources to respond to the city's request.
