House Republicans just revealed their new district maps that place three pairs of incumbents together in the same district.
The new district maps place outgoing House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr. of Olathe in the same district with Republican state Rep. Megan Lynn in House District 78.
Ryckman is leaving office this year after serving an unprecedented three terms as speaker.
The new maps also place Republican state Rep. Steven Johnson of Assaria in with state Rep. Clarke Sanders of Salina in House District 69.
Johnson is running for the Republican nomination for Kansas treasurer this year, leaving Sanders without an incumbent.
Meanwhile, conservative Republican state Rep. Kyle Hoffman of Coldwater was put in a district with moderate Republican state Rep. Boyd Orr of Fowler.
The target population of each House district will be 23,503 with a deviation of 5%, basically plus or minus about 1,175 people and range of between 22,329 and 24,679.
Hoffman’s district needed to add population because it was 13.43% below the targeted margin in order to ensure equal representation.
Likewise, Orr’s district was in a similar predicament since it was 9.47% below the targeted population.
Sanders’ Salina district was about 8% below the target population and needed to added more people. Johnson’s district, meanwhile, was about 4% below the target.
Here is a complete analysis showing how the 2020 census reshaped population in all 165 House and Senate districts.
