Republican state Rep. Pat Proctor on Thursday became the first candidate to announce his candidacy for Kansas secretary of state.
Proctor announced his candidacy to several dozen supporters at his Baan Thai restaurant in downtown Leavenworth, including House Speaker Dan Hawkins.
Now in his third term in the Kansas House, Proctor is seeking to replace Republican Scott Schwab, who is running for governor next year.
Proctor said he wanted to instill confidence in the electoral process, a theme he has sounded in the House as he has pushed various pieces of legislation.
