The Kansas State Board of Education on Tuesday announced that it was promoting one of its own staffers to become the next education commissioner.
The board named Jake Steel to replace Randy Watson, who announced his retirement as education commissioner last year. Steel will start June 1.
Steel now serves as director of strategy and operational alignment at the Kansas State Department of Education, where he has led initiatives to strengthen alignment across the agency, secured critical resources for schools and expanded support for educators.
