Two environmental groups with financial firepower want to intervene in the lawsuit brought by Kansas and other states challenging the federal government's decision to extend environmental protections to the lesser prairie chicken.

The Center for Biological Diversity and the Texas Campaign for the Environment on Monday asked a federal judge to allow them to defend the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to protect lesser prairie chickens under the Endangered Species Act.
