Gov. Laura Kelly turned to a candidate with experience as a prosecutor to fill a seat on the bench in the 6th Judicial District.
Kelly named Lenexa city prosecutor Sarah E. Stewart of Spring Hill to replace Judge Steven Montgomery, who retired July 3.
The 6th Judicial District covers Bourbon, Linn and Miami counties.
Stewart had previously served as the deputy Miami County attorney and late last year sought the position of Miami county attorney.
She lost to Assistant Barton County Attorney J. Colin Reynolds on a 32-12 vote, The Miami County Republic reported.
