Insurance Department to seek civil fine authority for fraud

Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt plans to seek the ability to levy civil penalties for insurance fraud, giving the agency more power to fight a crime that's believed to cost consumers billions each year.

The Insurance Department now contracts with the Kansas attorney general's office to prosecute insurance fraud.

The Insurance Department pays the attorney general $200,000 a year to prosecute those cases.

But the agency plans to ask the Legislature for the power to assess civil fines for hundreds of smaller cases that the state may not have the resources to prosecute.
