(Updated to distinguish between married and single filers)

Last week, a House committee moved out a new tax bill that calls for a flat tax at 5.25% and eliminates the state sales tax on food starting July 1, cuts property taxes and increases the standard deduction based on inflation.

The new bill would not tax the first $6,150 in income for single filers and $12,300 for married couples filing jointly.

Here’s a look at how the change in the tax rate would affect taxpayers assuming they take the current standard deduction and have no tax credits.

It also assumes they don’t pay taxes on the first $6,150 income for single filers and $12,300 for married couples.

Here’s a breakdown of the change in taxes under the new House bill approved by the tax committee last week as calculated by legislative research.
