House Democrats propose property tax cuts

A pair of House Democrats announced a three-plank plan for lowering property taxes, including a constitutional amendment reducing the taxable value on homes.

Democratic state Reps. Vic Miller of Topeka and Mike Amyx of Lawrence introduced their plan at a news conference Monday.

They want the joint Special Committee on Taxation to take up their idea later this fall with an eye toward introducing their plan next session.

The proposal effectively gives a platform to about two dozen Democratic challengers running for the House this year as well as six other incumbents defending their seats.
