Republican House leadership is asking the chief of justice of the Kansas Supreme Court to address the backlog of cases facing the court system before the ongoing emergency declaration might need to be extended.

House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr., Majority Leader Dan Hawkins and Speaker Pro Tem Blaine Finch sent a letter Chief Justice Marla Luckert asking for her "impressions" about the severity of the backlog of court cases.

The leadership team said it needed a better grasp of the situation before the governor asks the State Finance Council to extend the current emergency declaration, which expires on Oct. 15 . . .
