Eight seek appeals court seat

Eight candidates have applied to replace Appeals Court Judge Michael Buser, who will be  retiring from the bench at the end of January after 17 years.

The applicants will interview with a special screening panel that the governor established to reflect the way that justices for the Kansas Supreme Court are picked.

The nominating committee - like the commission that nominates justices for the Supreme Court - is made up of five lawyers and four nonattorneys.

The commission will interview all the candidates and recommend three to the governor to choose. The interviews will be done Jan. 5 at the federal courthouse . . .
