With large swaths of the state considered at elevated risk for a wildfire, Evergy is asking lawmakers to approve a bill limiting punitive and property damages resulting from out-of-control fires blamed on electric utilities in Kansas.

"The intent here today is to make sure that if a wildfire was to occur, that we are making sure financially that utilities can remain strong and continue to pursue the important infrastructure role that they play in the state," said Chuck Caisley, Evergy's chief customer officer.
