As lawmakers grapple with how to best cut property taxes, a new idea was floated this week when legislation emerged from a House committee that would tax sports wagering and the sale of lottery tickets.
Republican state Rep. Francis Awerkamp of St. Marys amended a bill in the tax committee to impose a 2% tax on sports betting with the proceeds going toward reducing the 20-mill property tax levy for schools.
The bill also would apply the state sales tax to the sale of lottery tickets to the extent that it's allowed . . .
