House panel moves out property tax bill, eliminates elections for raising revenue

A House committee on Monday agreed to scrap a property tax plan that was heavily criticized by cities because it required them to hold an election if they wanted to grow their property tax collections.

The House tax committee reverted back to a similar plan from last year when disgruntled taxpayers were given a tool - a protest petition - to fight local government spending,  not including schools, when property tax revenues are more than 3% from the year before.

Unlike typical protest petitions that initiate elections, the protest petition under the amended bill would allow taxpayers to sign a petition to . . .
