Building new electric transmission lines: A debate over competition

The debate over electric rates in Kansas is taking a new turn with a hotly contested proposal giving local utility companies the first shot at building transmission lines that connect to their facilities.

It's a high-profile debate at the Capitol that pits the state's biggest publicly owned utility — Evergy — against a Florida company - NextEra - that claims to be the largest utility in the world.

The Kansas Farm Bureau supports the bill as do some smaller utilities around the state. On the opposite side is the SSJ
