Democratic state Rep. Brandon Woodard, one of the first two LGBTQ lawmakers elected to the Legislature in 2018, emerged as the top Democrat in the House on Monday.
Woodard defeated Democratic challenger Stephanie Sawyer Clayton 24-13. He ran for the position in 2022 but lost to Rep. Vic Miller of Topeka by two votes.
Woodard takes the helm of a caucus that saw its membership winnowed by three members during this fall's election. House Republicans expanded their supermajority to 88 this year.
