Wind energy debate turns to taxes

The debate over wind energy is now turning to taxes as lawmakers consider a proposal to repeal a 10-year property tax exemption for renewables.

The Senate tax committee on Tuesday took up the last of eight bills that Republican state Sen. Mike Thompson of Shawnee has introduced this year to limit renewable energy development.

Thompson has pushed the bills with the idea of protecting local communities, but critics say they would be a death knell for a 20-year-old industry that has contributed $14 billion . . .
