Unemployment climbs with surge in jobless claims

After six months of steady decline, the state's unemployment rate ticked up in November as the number of jobless claims has surged.

The Labor Department on Friday morning reported that the state's unemployment rate had climbed to 5.6% in November from 5% a month earlier.

It was the first increase in the state's unemployment rate since April, when it hit a 40-year high of nearly 12%.

There have been indications of rising unemployment in the last month with the number of new jobless claims reaching levels that haven't been seen since the COVID-19 . . .
