A Senate Committee on Tuesday moved out a bill that gives tax credits to Kansas students who attend accredited private schools or home schools.

The bill that passed out of committee over the objection of public school advocates would provide a maximum of $75 million in tax credits in the first year of the program.

The amount of available credits could grow depending on the popularity of the program, which supporters said is important for giving parents choice on where their children are schooled.
