The Senate health committee balked at supporting Gov. Laura Kelly's nominee for state health secretary because of her commitment to following federal health guidance.
The committee sent Janet Stanek's nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation as Republican senators expressed reservations about how she would approach health regulations.
While the committee didn't endorse Stanek, it's not necessarily a death knell, especially since two more controversial appointments to the Kansas Board of Regents were confirmed by the state Senate on Wednesday.
