Senate President Ty Masterson on Tuesday invoked Senate rules to create a special committee to reexamine wind turbines but will be focused narrowly on lighting.

Masterson created the Senate Select Committee on Wind Turbine Lighting. The panel will be chaired by Republican state Sen. Elaine Bowers of Concordia.

Republican state Sen. Mike Thompson of Shawnee, one of the Senate's fiercest critics of the wind industry, is the committee's vice chair.

The goal is to develop a bill that could make Kansas the first state - or perhaps the second - to have a requirement for aircraft detection lighting systems.
