Regents seeking $273 million in budget enhancements; Budget director urges agencies to limit spending

The Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday agreed to seek $273 million in budget enhancements for fiscal year 2026, including a $51 million down payment on improving research capabilities at three of the state's biggest universities.

The request will now be sent to Gov. Laura Kelly, who will decide whether the money should be included in her budget recommendation to the Legislature at the beginning of the upcoming legislative session.

However, the governor's budget director sent a memo to state agencies this month, urging them to hold down their budget requests given that revenue is expected to decline . . .
