Two Republicans have joined the race for a new state Senate District that was drawn two years ago to favor a Democratic candidate.

The latest filings bring to five the number of candidates who are seeking to represent the newly formed 19th Senate district that extends east from Topeka to Lawrence that includes Tecumseh and Lecompton.

Cynthia Smith, who ran unsuccessfully for the Kansas House in 2018 against Lawrence Democratic state Rep. Mike Amyx, has filed for the District 19 seat.

A second GOP candidate, Tyler Wible, also has filed. No . . .
