Property tax cuts dominate headlines, but single tax rate still looming issue

No sooner than the Legislature approved tax cuts last session, Republican leaders immediately turned their attention to unfinished business.

“Not enough was done on property taxes,” House Speaker Dan Hawkins said shortly after the bill was passed during a special session last June.

Throughout the summer and fall, there's been a lot of back-and-forth between Republican leaders and Gov. Laura Kelly over cutting property taxes.

Republicans have vowed to cut state property taxes. It levies 20 mills for schools and 1.5 mills that fund construction and maintenance of buildings at state universities as well as veterans . . .
