Longtime moderate GOP leader passes away at 73

Steve Cloud, once a driving moderate force in the Kansas Republican Party, died after a short illness Wednesday night. He was 73.

The former three-term state lawmaker from Johnson County served as the Republican Party's national committeeman from 2002 to 2008, when the moderate wing of the GOP still held sway in Kansas. He was succeeded by Mike Pompeo in that role.

Cloud was remembered for being a stalwart Republican over the years even as conservatives gained influence over the party.
